Nothing ever happens to Henry Huggins. Nothing, that is, until a stray dog named Ribsy comes into his life. Pretty soon, Henry and Ribsy are wreaking havoc on the city bus, getting a ride in a police car with sirens wailing, and winning a prize at the dog show. Thanks to their joint shenanigans, Henry finds himself covered in green paint one day, and later accidentally colors Ribsy's fur pale pink. One week, Henry catches earthworms for his fisherman neighbor to raise money for a borrowed ball Ribsy helped him lose. One football costs a lot of earthworms--1,395, to be exact.

Caddie Woodlawn

Written in 1935 about Carol Ryrie Brink's grandmother's childhood, the adventures of Caddie and her brothers are still exciting over 60 years later.

Baby Island

SarahKate's Notes:

Two girls, ages 12 and 10, end up ship wrecked on a deserted island with 4 babies! Fortunately they adore babies and this is a fun and mostly realistic adventure. It amazes me though, that changing diapers is never mentioned! We just finished reading this book (2nd reading in the past year) and as soon as we finished it our 5 year old said "Let's read it again!" Mind you, it takes a week to read this chapter book.

Mary's Little Donkey and the Flight to Egypt (Contemporary Kelpies)

SarahKate's Notes:

We are not Christian, but we always read lots of books like this around Christmas, because our girls (then ages 5 & 8) love them. This book was fantastic! We found it to be heartwarming and quite captivating.

With this and his other poetry collections (A Light in the Attic and Falling Up), Silverstein reveals his genius for reaching kids with silly words and simple pen-and-ink drawings. What child can resist a poem called "Dancing Pants" or "The Dirtiest Man in the World"?

What Goes Around Comes Around

SarahKate's Notes:

An big hearted Grandmother makes big pots of soup and delivers portions to her hungry friends, for fun. One day her granddaughter accompanies her and is well received… I love the language in the book, I couldn't help going into the accents. All these adults cherish little Isabel and encouraged her to share her own talent – her colorful drawings. She sees that sharing her gifts makes the world a better place. Illustrations are simple (3 color), the story is a long one – 50 pages, the message is outstanding.
