The Trumpet of the Swan (4 CD Set)
Submitted by SarahKate on Mon, 03/17/2008 - 07:51.This story is read by the author E. B. White and is an outstanding book - 4 CDs worth! This is the same man that wrote Charlotte's Web, he is an amazing storyteller. I strongly recommend the audio version over the book, because we got to hear all the songs Louie the swan can play on his trumpet. Louie is a trumpeter swan that is born without a voice, but his father ends up breaking into a music store so he can have a trumpet to woo the swan of his desiring. It sounds a little wacky but E. B. White makes it work, and we all were so excited to get in the car so we could hear it.

Although he lacks a voice in the traditional "Ko-hoh!" sense, trumpeter swan Louis learns to speak to the world with a trumpet stolen from a music store by his father. With the support of an unusual boy named Sam, who helps Louis learn how to read and write, the swan has some rather unswanlike adventures and ultimately wins the love--and the freedom--of a beautiful swan named Serena. For over 30 years, E.B. White's masterpiece has captured the fancy of countless readers.

![]() | author: Carol Ryrie Brink rating: ![]() asin: 1416940286 binding: Paperback list price: $6.99 USD amazon price: $6.99 USD |
At age 11, Caddie Woodlawn is the despair of her mother and the pride of her father: a clock-fixing tomboy running wild in the woods of Wisconsin. In 1864, this is a bit much for her Boston-bred mother to bear, but Caddie and her brothers are happy with the status quo. Written in 1935 about Carol Ryrie Brink's grandmother's childhood, the adventures of Caddie and her brothers are still exciting over 60 years later.

Although the Little House stories are traditionally seen as "girl" books, boys might be happily surprised if they take another peek at their sisters' shelves. Little House in the Big Woods--the first book of the series and Laura Ingalls Wilder's first children's book--is full of the thrills, chills, and spills typically associated with "boy" books. Any boy or girl who has fantasized about running off to live in the woods will find ample information in these pages to manage a Wisconsin snowstorm, a panther attack, or a wild sled ride with a pig as an uninvited guest.
Stone Fox
Submitted by SarahKate on Tue, 11/06/2007 - 16:20.This is one of the books I wish I'd read all the way through before I read it to the girls (then ages 4 and 7). It is a really amazing book, the girls begged to hear it and at the end we all almost cried! This is an excellent story for older kids.

At 7 and a half, with working parents and a sister at "a difficult age," Ramona Quimby tries hard to do her part to keep family peace. Usually, however, she ends up behind every uproarious incident in the house. Whether she's dying herself blue, watching while her young neighbor flings Kleenex around the house, or wearing her soft new pajamas to school one day (under her clothes, of course), Ramona's life is never dull. Through it all, she is struggling for a place in her mother's heart, worried that she might be unlovable. Not a chance.
