Mary's Little Donkey and the Flight to Egypt (Contemporary Kelpies)

SarahKate's Notes:

We are not Christian, but we always read lots of books like this around Christmas, because our girls (then ages 5 & 8) love them. This book was fantastic! We found it to be heartwarming and quite captivating.

The stubborn, dirty little donkey is of no use to anyone in Nazareth, but he becomes a quick and willing helper under Mary's care. Here is an engaging alternative to the traditional Christmas story. It can be read to children aged 6-8, or children from 8-10 can read to themselves. (Ages 6-10)

A Child's Good Night Book Board Book

SarahKate's Notes:

This is a very simple, soothing book about how all creatures on the planet sleep at night. At the end there is a beautiful picture of angels holding children and small animals as they sleep. The last page is a prayer: "Dear Father, hear and bless/Thy beasts and singing birds,/and guard with tenderness/Small things that have no words."

Night is coming and small things without words are going to sleep . . . sleepy bunnies, sleepy birds, and sleepy children, too, are getting under their covers. "Jean Charlot's illustrations are first-rate." —NYT. Barbara Bader called this 1943 book, now restored to its original size and format, "the first of the true bedtime books." 1944 Caldecott Honor Book
