Arizona was born in a log cabin her papa built. She grew into a tall girl who liked to sing, square-dance, and -- most of all -- read and dream of the faraway places she would visit one day.Arizona never did make it to those places. Instead she became a teacher, helping generations of children in the one-room schoolhouse which she herself had attended. Gloria Houston's Joyous recounting of her great-aunt Arizona's quiet yet meaningful life reminds us of the magical place a special teacher can hold in our hearts.

Illus. in full color. "A fresh and moving story of a mother's dedication to acquire a coat for her daughter in post-World War II hard times. Anna's mother decides to trade the few valuables she has left for wool and for the services of a spinner, a weaver, and a tailor. Lobel's pictures do a tremendous job of evoking the period. Insightful and informative, this may make children consider how precious the ordinary can become in times of turmoil."--(starred) Booklist.

Writing in a scrapbook in 1927, a young girl tells the fascinating story of her family's mail-order house arriving from Sears, Roebuck. Moving out of the little house they share with their grandparents, Emily and her brother, Homer, have a lot of changes in store for them: an electric refrigerator, electric lights, a washing machine, a gas stove, and running water indoors. Luminous illustrations show, in great detail, the process of clearing the land, building a foundation, and creating a house from a kit.
Summerbath, Winterbath
Submitted by SarahKate on Sun, 11/11/2007 - 14:23."Before supper Althea rocked her baby brother on the porch swing so her mother could roast the chicken in peace. / After supper, when stars and fireflies spilled into the night and the backyard was a puddle of moonlight, Althea pulled on her black woolen bathing suit. / Her mother handed her a chunk of brown soap and Althea scrubbed and splashed in the backyard tub, in the day long, sun warmed water, singing with the tree frogs and crickets, singing a summerbath song."

The Year of the Ranch (Viking Kestrel Picture Books)
Submitted by SarahKate on Sat, 11/10/2007 - 21:56.Katje, the Windmill Cat
Submitted by SarahKate on Wed, 11/07/2007 - 16:19.Katje is the miller's cat, catching mice and keeping him company
happily. Then one day, brings home his bride and everything changes...
This is a story of bravery and devotion, with this little cat as a
hero. Our (then) 3 year old requested this several times, even though it seems a
bit long for her. I like this story for it's historical value, it's
fascinating to think of how people lived and married.

Cocoa Ice
Submitted by SarahKate on Tue, 11/06/2007 - 16:47.Have you ever wondered how chocolate is made? This picture book goes into detail about how the farmers pick the pods, dry the insides between banana leaves and turn the beans as they dry. One girl lives in Santo Domingo and tells about her life in creating chocolate, and how excited she is when the sailors bring ice to trade for cocoa beans Another girl lives in Maine and shares about her life where her father cuts ice from the river and packs the ice house. It was fascinating to hear about how these everyday things we love used to be made.
