Snow White: Silver Anniversary Edition
Submitted by SarahKate on Wed, 04/23/2008 - 16:54.Wow! We loved the illustrations in this book, a true adaptation of the Snow White tale translated from Brothers Grimm. In the end the wicked queen puts on the red hot slippers and dances to her death, and I realize this is the translation from the original story, but our girls didn't understand why or how this happened. Otherwise, it is a fantastic, gripping read!

Spared by her would-be executioner, Snow White finds a home with seven kindly dwarfs, but the hateful queen who wants her dead will stop at nothing to be the most beautiful woman in the land. A poisoned apple seems to send Snow White to her death, but true love brings her back, and good once again prevails. Paul Heins's graceful words and Trina Schart Hyman's expressive artwork create a dramatic retelling of this classic tale, filled with movement and passion that will enchant readers of all ages.
Cinderella (Golden Kite Honors (Awards))

Poor Cinderella, who is relegated to a dingy garret room by her duplicitous stepmother and beleaguered by her nasty stepsisters, never gives in to hostility or revenge. Instead, this sweet heroine remains steadfast in her kind, gentle ways, and her generosity flows like a mountain stream. This tale of virtue rewarded is as charming and rich as any prince. McClintock's warm, humorous, and lucious artwork that reflects the story's French roots, coupled with her disarming text will insure that this book will be loved and cherished -- happily ever after.
Melisande
Submitted by SarahKate on Wed, 04/23/2008 - 16:38.This is an excellent fairy tale from E. Nesbit, written about a hundred years ago. A evil fairy who wasn't invited to the princess's christening declares that she shall be bald.... an amusing tale of her wish for ever growing hair follows. This book is a favorite of both our girls (then ages 5 & 8).

Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Brave
Submitted by SarahKate on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 08:24.Our (then) 5 year old wants to hear the story of Vasilisa again and again. It's a harsh fairy tale, with wicked stepmothers and witches that eat people. But the beautiful Vasilisa gracefully triumphs, all because of her (dead) mother's love contained in a magical doll.

Sweet, lovely Vasilisa lives with her jealous stepmother and stepsisters on the edge of a dark forest inhabited by the evil witch Baba Yaga. One night the stepmother sends Vasilisa to visit Baba Yaga, an errand from which the gentle girl has little chance of returning alive. "An engaging text and accomplished paintings set this version apart....A stylized and classy offering."--School Library Journal.

Maria is feeling so grown-up, wearing her mother's apron and helping to knead the masa for the Christmas corn tamales. Her mother even let Maria wear some perfume and lipstick for the big family celebration that evening. When her mother takes off her diamond ring so it won't become coated with the messy masa, Maria decides that life would be perfect if she could wear the ring, too. Trouble begins when she sneakily slips the sparkly ring on her thumb and resumes her kneading. Uh oh.
The Sun Egg
Submitted by SarahKate on Mon, 11/19/2007 - 17:52.The illustrations in this book are amazing, and I love how the beautiful little elf dances the creatures awake. There is some harsh language in this book that I just edit out every time I read it aloud, but otherwise it is a really sweet book that our (then) 4 year old loved to hear over and over.
