Hitty Her First Hundred Years

SarahKate's Notes:

Published in 1929 this book is a classic, a story of a wooden doll carved in the early 1800s. In 262 pages we read about her first 100 years, being lost and found by one little girl after another. Her adventures were fascinating and the girls (ages 5 & 8) begged for more each time. In each chapter we encountered at least 2 words we had to look up in the dictionary. This is an outstanding story! We each give it 5 stars.

Cinderella (Golden Kite Honors (Awards))

SarahKate's Notes:

Cinderella is a favorite in our home, and this one is full of the tiniest, beautiful details.

Poor Cinderella, who is relegated to a dingy garret room by her duplicitous stepmother and beleaguered by her nasty stepsisters, never gives in to hostility or revenge. Instead, this sweet heroine remains steadfast in her kind, gentle ways, and her generosity flows like a mountain stream. This tale of virtue rewarded is as charming and rich as any prince. McClintock's warm, humorous, and lucious artwork that reflects the story's French roots, coupled with her disarming text will insure that this book will be loved and cherished -- happily ever after.

Melisande

SarahKate's Notes:

This is an excellent fairy tale from E. Nesbit, written about a hundred years ago. A evil fairy who wasn't invited to the princess's christening declares that she shall be bald.... an amusing tale of her wish for ever growing hair follows. This book is a favorite of both our girls (then ages 5 & 8).

Games of tag on the deck; swings tied to the masts; a floating farmyard filled with chickens and ducks and even a pig; exotic pets, including a mongoose, a monkey, a kangaroo; studying astronomy and celestial navigation under the stars and geography with firsthand visits all over the world. This was the childhood of the four Madsen children who made their home aboard a four-masted sailing bark that carried cargo in the 1800s. Based on the journal kept by Captain Madsen and his daughter Ena, the story of this seafaring family is brought to life for modern children by Gloria and Ted Rand.

The Prince of the Pond: Otherwise Known as De Fawg Pin

SarahKate's Notes:

We laughed out loud throughout this book, it was so much fun to read. It was fascinating to hear about life from a frog's perspective and the girls were so very eager to hear more chapters from this book. It is the first in a series.
Note of caution: The fact that frogs mate is brought up, though saying that males have suckers on their 'hands' so that they can hold on is as far as they go to describe the process.

Every night the rhyme gets read. Every night Dish and Spoon run away. And every night they return--until tonight! Where can Dish and Spoon be? The rhyme can't go on without them, so Cat, Cow, and Dog set out to search for their missing friends. But where to start? Should they go north? East? Northeast? They'll just have to read Fork's map, ask directions, and try not to get lost in Little Boy Blue's haystack or under Miss Muffet's tuffet or in Big Bad Wolf's kitchen--"FEE, FI, FO . . ." Oh no. Could that be the giant?
