The Prince of the Pond: Otherwise Known as De Fawg Pin

SarahKate's Notes:

We laughed out loud throughout this book, it was so much fun to read. It was fascinating to hear about life from a frog's perspective and the girls were so very eager to hear more chapters from this book. It is the first in a series.
Note of caution: The fact that frogs mate is brought up, though saying that males have suckers on their 'hands' so that they can hold on is as far as they go to describe the process.

Baby Island

SarahKate's Notes:

Two girls, ages 12 and 10, end up ship wrecked on a deserted island with 4 babies! Fortunately they adore babies and this is a fun and mostly realistic adventure. It amazes me though, that changing diapers is never mentioned! We just finished reading this book (2nd reading in the past year) and as soon as we finished it our 5 year old said "Let's read it again!" Mind you, it takes a week to read this chapter book.

Happy Times in Noisy Village

SarahKate's Notes:

Our children adore these books (there's 2 in the series - this is book 2) and love to hear the stories over and over. 6 children live in 3 homes close together out in the country in Norway. We always laugh out loud together when we read these books.

The Children of Noisy Village

SarahKate's Notes:

Our children adore these books (there's 2 in the series - this is book 1) and love to hear the stories over and over, year after year. This is one of the absolute best chapter books I've ever come across for children. 6 children live in 3 homes close together out in the country in Norway. We always laugh out loud together when we read these books.

Twig

SarahKate's Notes:

This is a delightful classic, written in 1942. It is a chapter book (152 pages) that our (then) 5 year old loved so much that she requested it twice in one year. Twig builds a fairy house out of a tomato can and hopes a fairy will come "any minuet." Instead, a dear and cheeky little elf shows up, and magically changes her into an elf too. They have many simple, humorous adventures. We absolutely love this book!

Twig was just a plain, ordinary little girl who lived on the fourth floor of a "high sort of house" in the city. The back yard behind that house was Twig's little world. It was a bare little world, with nothing but a dandelion and a stream of drainpipe water to make it beautiful; with nobody but Old Boy, the ice-wagon horse, Old Girl, the cat, and the Sparrows, to keep Twig company. But one day, out in the alley, Twig found an empty tomato can, with pictures of bright red tomatoes all round it. When it was upside down, it looked like a pretty little house, just the right size for a fairy!

Big Susan

SarahKate's Notes:

This is a really sweet story of how the dolls in a young girl's dollhouse come to life on the night before Christmas. Our (then) 6 year old enjoyed it so much that she had me read it to her twice in the time we had it checked out from the library – each time it took 3 or 4 days to read it. What I enjoyed most was how kind all the family members were to each other and how enthusiastic and grateful they were. Susan is the little girl who carefully moves them and speaks for them, and they think very highly of her. This year, for Christmas, they have received a little baby, who they call Little Susan. " 'This year we got something better – oh! A million times better!' said all the children together. 'We got you, Little Susan! We got you!'"

Mr. and Mrs. Doll and their six children, Nurse and the old Cook all lived in a house which had no front and belong to Susan. Susan was just an ordinary-sized little girl with taffy colored pigtails. But to the dolls she was a very Big, very Wonderful, very Important Person. There was one short night in every year when they needed no help from Susan - that Wonderful Night when all Dolls come alive and can speak.

Half Magic

SarahKate's Notes:

This book is timeless and hilarious. One of the most wonderful parts of my life is laughing out loud with my children and we did that many, many times throughout this book. Four children find a magic charm that will grant wishes, and how they handle it and the lessons they learn is fascinating. The imagination in this book is inspiring.

Edward Eager has been delighting young readers for more than 40 years with stories that mix magic and reality. Half Magic, the most popular of his tales about four children who encounter magical coins, time-travel herb gardens, and other unlikely devices, is a warm, funny, original adventure. The title refers to a coin that the children find. Through a comical series of coincidences, they discover that the coin is magic. Well, it's not totally magic--it's only (you guessed it) half magic. That means there's a certain logic to the wishes one must make to generate a desired outcome.
