Fifteen years ago, long before anyone else thought of tucking actual letters and notes inside a book, Little, Brown published The Jolly Postman by Allan and Janet Ahlberg. This wonderful book gave children a chance to read letters sent from one fairy tale or Mother Goose character to another. Among the funny notes was one from Jack, who lolled on a sun-drenched island, thanking the Giant for the gold that let him afford such a nifty vacation. All this amusing correspondence was deftly illustrated and the book attracted hordes of eager readers.

I wish I lived a thousand years ago. There would be beautiful castles, kings and queens, good knights, bad knights, fair ladies in danger, evil dragons from the mountains, and a giant troll that roars and eats anything. What kid hasn?t dreamed of living in fairy-tale times?hasn?t imagined himself as the bravest knight in all the land (or at least the knight?s faithful squire). As he has done in his celebrated There?s a Nightmare in My Closet and its follow-ups, Mercer Mayer brings childhood fantasy hilariously to life here.

Imogene's Antlers

SarahKate's Notes:

They say, laughter is the best medicine. I think it's important to read silly books, the kind that make your imagination spark. We read this over and over and over, and giggled each time we got to the last page. It's about a girl who wake up to find she has grown antlers, and her mother keeps fainting at the sight of her. This was a top favorite of our (then) 3 yo and our (then) 7 yo enjoyed it too.

Imagine a Night

SarahKate's Notes:

The paintings in this book are extraordinary! One shows three children jumping on beds, and patchwork quilts change into rivers and farms seen from high above. "Imagine a night … when you can't sleep, and so you jump high enough to soar over a quilt of fields and forests." Very magical and inspiring to the imagination.

Sky Castle (Jody Bergsma Collection) (Jody Bergsma Collection)

SarahKate's Notes:

This is an amazingly illustrated, rhyming book with a powerful message. It is the story of children who use their imaginations to build a majestic castle in the sky, "Let's fill up our castle with all of life's treasure, Like warm hugs and smiles and love beyond measure. Light hearts and laughter will start each new day, To brighten our path and show us the way." Full of fairies, unicorns, and many other colorful creatures, this poetic vision is an inspiration: "Remember, as long as you think and you feel, Imagination and love will make your dreams real."

Half Magic

SarahKate's Notes:

This book is timeless and hilarious. One of the most wonderful parts of my life is laughing out loud with my children and we did that many, many times throughout this book. Four children find a magic charm that will grant wishes, and how they handle it and the lessons they learn is fascinating. The imagination in this book is inspiring.

Edward Eager has been delighting young readers for more than 40 years with stories that mix magic and reality. Half Magic, the most popular of his tales about four children who encounter magical coins, time-travel herb gardens, and other unlikely devices, is a warm, funny, original adventure. The title refers to a coin that the children find. Through a comical series of coincidences, they discover that the coin is magic. Well, it's not totally magic--it's only (you guessed it) half magic. That means there's a certain logic to the wishes one must make to generate a desired outcome.
