We listened to the audio version of The Wheel on the School (320 pages), a 1955 Newberry Winner that had all of us interested in riding in the car so we could hear it. It was really neat to hear about life in Holland, during a time when the village school had only 6 children, with only one girl - Lina. She surprises the teacher by independently writing a short composition, wondering why storks don't nest in their fishing village of Shora but they nest in all the neighboring villages. This inspires them to figure it out and they are are encouraged to spend their school time to work out the solution. It sounds dry but this is a very exciting book! This is a fantastic book about the power of hope, and the idea that it take a village to raise a child.

Three of a KindBetsy and Tacy are best friends. Then Tib moves into the neighborhood and the three of them start to play together. The grown-ups think they will quarrel, but they don't. Sometimes they quarrel with Betsy's and Tacy's bossy big sisters, but they never quarrel among themselves.They are not as good as they might be. They cook up awful messes in the kitchen, throw mud on each other and pretend to be beggars, and cut off each other's hair.

This is the first book in a series written in the early 1940's that has been loved by generations; in fact my parents read it to me and I loved it. 5 year old Betsy and Tacy begin their sweet friendship in this book. They both have 8 year old sisters, so I thought this book would be perfect for our family, since our girls are those ages, and I was right. I was surprised that our (then) 8 year old loved it so much, it's a favorite of hers as well as our (then) 5 year old, and we are pretty excited to continue with the next book and read the series.

Best Friends Forever There are lots of children on Hill Street, but no little girls Betsy's age. So when a new family moves into the house across the street, Betsy hopes they will have a little girl she can play with. Sure enough, they do--a little girl named Tacy. And from the moment they meet at Betsy's fifth birthday party, Betsy and Tacy becoms such good friends that everyone starts to think of them as one person--Betsy-Tacy.Betsy and Tacy have lots of fun together.

Roxaboxen

This book sweeps you up in the imagination of children who spend their summer building a town, Roxaboxen, out of rocks and bits of desert glass. This book is truly a favorite of my (then) 7 yo, and has been for years.

Marian called it Roxaboxen. (She always knew the name of everything.) There across the road, it looked like any rocky hill -- nothing but sand and rocks, some old wooden boxes, cactus and greasewood and thorny ocotillo -- but it was a special place: a sparkling world of jeweled homes, streets edged with the whitest stones, and two ice cream shops.
Happy Times in Noisy Village

Our children adore these books (there's 2 in the series - this is book 2) and love to hear the stories over and over. 6 children live in 3 homes close together out in the country in Norway. We always laugh out loud together when we read these books.
