Once upon a time, deep in the middle of a forest, stood an old castle. An ancient witch lived in the castle, and she had powerful magic. She cast a spell on any young man who came within one hundred steps of the castle—freezing him to the spot so he could not move or speak until the witch set him free. If a young girl wandered too near the castle walls, the witch turned her into a bird, and locked her in a cage inside the castle. But true love triumphs over evil enchantment in this story of one young couple, the beautiful Jorinda and Jorindel, the shepherd boy who loves her. Adapted and illustrated by Bernadette Watts, this tale by the Brothers Grimm will enchant youngsters with its sweetness and charm and not-too-frightening magic.
Russian Fairy Tales (Everyman's Library Children's Classics)
Submitted by SarahKate on Tue, 05/06/2008 - 14:59.This collection of classic Russian fairy tales is fascinating. Expect this book to be as violent as other classic fairy tales, complete with witches that threaten to eat you if you don't do her chores, heros that get cut up in pieces but somehow come back to life, evil step mothers and step sisters are burnt to ashes from a glowing skull, and so on. There aren't too many pictures, but the ones they do have are exquisite. This was a favorite of our (then) 5 year old, who was particularly fond of the tale "Vassilissa the Beautiful and the Witch Baba Yaga", which I think I've read over a dozen times.

Notable for their magnificent, jewel-like color illustrations by Bilibin, these traditional tales include "The Frog Princess," "Vassilissa the Beautiful," and "The White Duck." Though Russian Fairy Tales in the Pantheon Folklore Library is a book for adults, it has sold over 30,000 copies.
Snow White: Silver Anniversary Edition
Submitted by SarahKate on Wed, 04/23/2008 - 16:54.Wow! We loved the illustrations in this book, a true adaptation of the Snow White tale translated from Brothers Grimm. In the end the wicked queen puts on the red hot slippers and dances to her death, and I realize this is the translation from the original story, but our girls didn't understand why or how this happened. Otherwise, it is a fantastic, gripping read!

Spared by her would-be executioner, Snow White finds a home with seven kindly dwarfs, but the hateful queen who wants her dead will stop at nothing to be the most beautiful woman in the land. A poisoned apple seems to send Snow White to her death, but true love brings her back, and good once again prevails. Paul Heins's graceful words and Trina Schart Hyman's expressive artwork create a dramatic retelling of this classic tale, filled with movement and passion that will enchant readers of all ages.

The acclaimed Donna Jo Napoli's beloved and hilarious series about Pin, the (frog) Prince of the Pond, continues with more funny language, wild adventure, and magic. As Gracie the frog picks up the story, she knows her friend Jimmy is special, but even she can't believe his wild stories about his human father and his own adventures as a boy in the palace. Still, she follows him when he leaves the pond. But can she overcome a wicked hag-turned-crocodile, a bratty princess, a menacing cook, and her own froggy instincts to rescue Jimmy and win his love?
The Prince of the Pond: Otherwise Known as De Fawg Pin
Submitted by SarahKate on Tue, 04/01/2008 - 12:04.We laughed out loud throughout this book, it was so much fun to read. It was fascinating to hear about life from a frog's perspective and the girls were so very eager to hear more chapters from this book. It is the first in a series.
Note of caution: The fact that frogs mate is brought up, though saying that males have suckers on their 'hands' so that they can hold on is as far as they go to describe the process.

Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Brave

It's a harsh fairy tale, with wicked stepmothers and witches that eat people. But the beautiful Vasilisa gracefully triumphs, all because of her (dead) mother's love contained in a magical doll.
