Hitty Her First Hundred Years

SarahKate's Notes:

Published in 1929 this book is a classic, a story of a wooden doll carved in the early 1800s. In 262 pages we read about her first 100 years, being lost and found by one little girl after another. Her adventures were fascinating and the girls (ages 5 & 8) begged for more each time. In each chapter we encountered at least 2 words we had to look up in the dictionary. This is an outstanding story! We each give it 5 stars.

The Wheel on the School

SarahKate's Notes:

We listened to the audio version of The Wheel on the School (320 pages), a 1955 Newberry Winner that had all of us interested in riding in the car so we could hear it. It was really neat to hear about life in Holland, during a time when the village school had only 6 children, with only one girl - Lina. She surprises the teacher by independently writing a short composition, wondering why storks don't nest in their fishing village of Shora but they nest in all the neighboring villages. This inspires them to figure it out and they are are encouraged to spend their school time to work out the solution. It sounds dry but this is a very exciting book! This is a fantastic book about the power of hope, and the idea that it take a village to raise a child.

Why do the storks no longer come to the little Dutch fishing village of Shora to nest? It was Lina, one of the six schoolchildren who first asked the question, and she set the others to wondering. And sometimes when you begin to wonder, you begin to make things happen. So the children set out to bring the storks back to Shora. The force of their vision put the whole village to work until at last the dream began to come true. Akimbo and the Lions

SarahKate's Notes:

A great story about how a boy wants to help his father capture a wild lion that has been attacking a farmer's animals. There is a scary part where the father thinks the lion has been captured but it has not, and the boy has to pick up the father's forgotten gun (loaded to put the lion to sleep) and shoot. He doesn't hit anything but he does frighten the lion away. We enjoyed this suspenseful story of this African boy and the lion cub he ends up raising.

The Trumpet of the Swan (4 CD Set)

SarahKate's Notes:

This story is read by the author E. B. White and is an outstanding book - 4 CDs worth! This is the same man that wrote Charlotte's Web, he is an amazing storyteller. I strongly recommend the audio version over the book, because we got to hear all the songs Louie the swan can play on his trumpet. Louie is a trumpeter swan that is born without a voice, but his father ends up breaking into a music store so he can have a trumpet to woo the swan of his desiring. It sounds a little wacky but E. B. White makes it work, and we all were so excited to get in the car so we could hear it.

With the support of an unusual boy named Sam, who helps Louis learn how to read and write, the swan has some rather unswanlike adventures and ultimately wins the love--and the freedom--of a beautiful swan named Serena. We are not Christian, but we always read lots of books like this around Christmas, because our girls (then ages 5 & 8) love them. This book was fantastic! We found it to be heartwarming and quite captivating.
